Title: I love Singapore!
Caption: It was my third time being present at the National Day Parade, once as a participant, twice as a spectator. But that very last time I was there, which was last year, was the only time that I truly felt proud being a Singaporean. I guess its because that was the very last time anyone would be able to celebrate National Day at the National Stadium, it was going to be demolished. I had pestered my parents to bring the entire family to watch the National Day Parade. Together with the other Singaporeans, we did the famous Kallang wave and sang to the tunes of famous National Day songs. That was the time I understood the meaning of ‘One People, One Nation, One Singapore’.

Sixth Place

Title: Sleep Well, Little Child
Caption: We’ve had our five senses since birth. As we mature, we come to understand a greater variety of senses due to greater exposure to our environment. This affects our outlook on life and we develop certain perceptions because of this. Even when we are asleep, our senses are subconsciously at work as we dream. The power of our senses!

Title: Innocence
Caption: This picture was taken in Cambodia, 2004. I feel that this picture embodies all the 5 senses that we human beings have. Sense of touch (skin), Sense of smell(nose), Sense of sight(eyes), Sense of hearing(ears) and Sense of taste(tongue). To the baby, the food must have tasted and smelt heavenly (Taste). This is as children in Cambodia often starve and some die because of starvation. Their diet is what we Singaporeans detest and label as pests: roaches, worms etc. The baby boy is distracted by what he sees and hears (Eyes and Ear). This is as in this rural part of Cambodia, the villagers rarely see visitors and rarely receive foreign aid from others. The baby is distracted and too engrossed with this rare meal so much so that he doesnt realised that he has made a mess out of his meal and dirtied himself (touch). I find this picture special as the baby has this innocent look in him. The way he looks at people is genuine, non-judgemental, unlike in the real world today where we get judged on everything and anything. You can tell how a baby feels from the way he looks. All his emotions are displayed on that innocent face of his, be it happiness, sadness, boredom etc. This is in direct opposite to the real world, where a smile doesnt equate happiness. Theres a chinese saying that goes, xiao li chang dao'. This means that behind that smile of others, people always have evil and selfish intentions. The world today isnt simple, its a complicated complex world out there.

Tenth Place

Name: Khng Choon Chea Claudia
PDG: 25/07

Title: Forlorn
Caption: This picture depicts a sense of immense loneliness and a deep feeling of alienation. Animals, like humans, crave for companionship and warmth. The portrayal of the cat lying on the ground alone, with its eyes staring pitifully at the gournd illustrates the loneliness it feels – the deep sense of forlorn engulfing its soul. It is alone in the struggle for survival, only equipped with the barest minimum, the cold hard ground littered with fallen wilted leaves. Yet, what is truly life? Would life be just as colourful and vibrant without the company of family and friends? The answer is certain. We would only be left with an empty soul.
